Antillectual

The new album is only out for pre-order and already we're receiving reactions, responses and reviews. Which are actually quite nice, to say the least. Below you can read two reviews from Italian zines.

January 27, 2008: Antillectual – Testimony cd (No Reason Records, 2008)

The record actually doesn't come out in our country till March, and therefore I'm reviewing this album in advance: Antillectual – the latest addition to No Reason Records' catalog – coming from Nijmegen, the Netherlands, play a mixture of punk-hardcore in the style of the labels' previous releases (Rentokill, Enemy Alliance / Indecision Alarm). Melody and political commitment, in the spirit of Propagandhi, is the basis for this complex and valuable release. Valuable on several levels: the excellent looking digipack and especially the booklet – graphically sublime, including texts and additional notes for every single lyric – are no longer just an extra, but are an essential factor for the complete understanding of the message.

The 10 tracks are strongly structured  (from the musical professionalism it shows Antillectual clearly prefers unusual arrangements) and finalized very well with lyrical content: an anarchist point of view is present during the entire album, while the band gives its opinions on American imperialist policy ("Testimony"), on multinationals and their impact on the culture and the resistance against it ("Sponsorship for life"), on prison policy ("I hope you got my letter"), feminism ("Waves") and the punk circuit itself ("I hate myself when I shave myself"). In other moments, however, the discussion focuses on the personal state of mind and on individual positions. This happens without discussing concrete situations, but rather browsing the philosophical field ("Benefit of the doubt" probably one of the best songs of the album).

Testimony is certainly not a simple album, but in its kind it is undoubtedly an incredibly coherent and meticulously thought out piece of music. All this in the spirit of the highlights of the DIY movement of the eighties. It's highly recommended listening to it on repeat, especially if you want to expand your views and musical ideas. I suggest you to immediately order your copy.

Antillectual – "Testimony" (No Reason Records)

It seemed like I'm listening to the new album by the great Propagandhi, but it is "only" the debut record from the Lodi based No Reason Records from Dutch band Antillectual. Our old friends ("Silencing Civilization" – review).

"Testimony" will come out next March 3 and win over all lovers of this kind of music with their refined melodic hardcore/punk enriched with political and social lyrics. But, frankly, the lyrics stay a little in the background because of the quality of the music. This is a plus point though.There are several resemblances with the Canadian, and sometimes it appears almost plagiarism (they simply love Propagandhi too much), but in the end Antillectual convinces me totally and doesn't leave any unpleasant feeling behind. It all works out for the best.High technically compositions enriched by diverse rhythms and melodies, this is one of the better punk/hardcore releases in recent months. With sincere regards to the increasingly stubborn and conscious No Reason Records, which seems very determined to focus on this style in Italy

Furthermore, we have some terrible news to announce. A lot of you might have met Etjen (our friend and driver from "Just Like Your Mom" tour support) when we came over on one of the tours we did the last years. Either in his camouflage printed van, or his insanely equipped luxury van. Since he helped us out in the best possible way and since a lot of you might know him (through us) we felt necessary to report this. Last week his van got crashed and crushed by a truck in the UK, total loss. Since it was parked there weren't any people involved and there wasn't any equipment broken. But since driving us and other bands around is not only his life but also his living, we hope he can get back on the road as soon as possible with a new van. We wish him all the luck we can!

Last, we still have some dates to fill on our upcoming tour in southern France, Spain and/or Portugal. If you feel like helping us out, please do so! The dates are these:

Antillectual – Testimony

From mid-tempo melancholic post-punk to thrashing punkrock! Antillectual is far from ashamed to militantly show its versatility on the band's second full-length album. Indeed, Silencing Civilization's successor is a straight up hit! Recognizable melody, emotion, and passion combined with somewhat unconventional structures, inventive guitar riffs and vocal harmonies. Propagandhi meeting A Wilhelm Scream meeting Strike Anywhere meeting No Use For A Name meeting Bad Religion with a hint of Hot Water Music? No, totally different! (But somewhat alike).

From the rising of the drums in opening song Testimony to the fade out of the swelling sounds in I Hope You Got My Letter, all are a feast for the ear and eye. Not the least for the eye, because again the socially critical lyrics and their explanations can be found in the booklet.

Plusses are among many things the hot Maiden riff in The Dog Ate It! and pleasantly up-tempo rocking songs like Waves and On Its Own. The only blot is the length of I Hope You Got My Letter that tends to stand out in that way. This could be a personal objection that no one agrees with though, so don't be bothered. If the record contained 4 more songs I wouldn't even have noticed.

Well, a band that spreads its message with this much passion and integrity and, on top of that, is a treat for the ear, what else could one wish for?How beautiful punkrock can be. *Sigh*

To celebrate the new release we're having a release show on March 21. It will take place in cafe The Stage in Arnhem. Other bands playing will be Holland's finest:

this update brings good news! first: news about the tour through germany, the united kingdom and germany. the tour is looking better and better. we're still looking for 4 shows so help is welcome, as usual. please drop by and say hello if you're from the area we'll be touring. we'll bring new songs to play, new merchandise, the snowstar records distro and the typewriter book distro. for this upcoming tour we’ll be doing another tour report (in english) on the dutch music portal 3voor12 .

next to the tour dates some more dutch dates have been announced. we'll be playing with frightening fiction, bob's new band! and also new touring plans for march. check it under shows. it feels good to go out on the road again after 2 months of working on the release full time.speaking of which; finally, after waiting forever and ever and ever we can announce our new album "tesimony" to be released on march 3, 2008. exactly three years after the release of our last full length "silencing civilization". the new album will be released by fond of life records (uk, ger, lux.), infected records (por.), no reason records (ita.), rise or rust records (a.), shield recordings (nl, bel.) and youth way records (fr.). we're very happy to have the full support of these 6 cool and hard working labels. from february 2 you can get your pre-orders from a label near you. this release makes us “label mates” with great bands like enemy alliance, rentokill, this is a standoff, the indecision alarm, the real danger, the twisted minds, astpai, straightaway and much more awesome bands. we can't tell you how much we have been and are still looking forward to this release. some more details: the album is recorded in august 2007, in die tonmeisterei studio in oldenburg, germany. nico van montfort (a.o. face tomorrow, malkovich, instil) did an amazing job on the recording/mixing/mastering of the album. the album costs 10 euro (shipping excluded) and will come in a beautiful digipack designed by gemma pauwels. next to a digipack version shield recordings will also release a vinyl version on 12” and the album will be available in several download stores through fond of life records.

last thing; when we were in the states we made a tour report that got a lot of positive reactions. when we were on the second part of the transatlantic tour in europe we also shot some footage, not as much as in the u.s.a. though, obviously we had some problems with other “stuff”. check out what “stuff” on the video report from the european part of the transatlantic tour report on youtube and on this website. look under “photos” for a lot of photos and a written tour report in english. on our youtube site you can still find the video reports we made during our u.s.a. tour. feel free to become our “video friend”. a studio video report we shot during the recordings of our new album will follow soon.

thanks to all the friendly people that came out to the amazing enemy alliance show in amsterdam. nice to play there again and see so many familiar faces. we hope you enjoyed it as much.

about the release: people keep asking us about it, and it feels terrible we still can't confirm anything. but it wouldn't be wise to do so until all parties are 100% confirmed and everything is arranged. as we say in dutchland "we are putting the dots on the 'i'" and things are looking damn fine so far. more news within 2 weeks for sure.

to kill the time please read the tour report yvo wrote during the last euro tour we did with static radio. it's online in english here finally.

we are also still working on our u.k.-germany tour in january. please have a look at the dates and let us know if you can help us out on the still available dates. it would mean a lot to us. looking forward to that one, even though it will be cold! in the mean time we also added some more german dates in february.

hey there! from the outside it might seem there's not much happening, but on the inside it's boiling. we're working on the release full time, we don't even have time to play shows this month. but things are looking good, the album will appear on both c.d. and vinyl this time and will be available all over europe. and beyond. that's more or less all we can say right now. as soon as there's confirmations, we'll post it here.

what we did update is the merchandise section. the new zipped hoody is online and orderable. and adorable. and all buttons/pins are back in stock again, just like the new stickers. go see for yourself.

awaiting the new album and the new songs you can watch the video that was shut at our last show (to date) in breda. there's some new songs on it too, if you're interested. check it out on our youtube page under "favorites", of course!
