01 November 2020 ~ Comments Off on 10 year anniversary Start From Scratch!

10 year anniversary Start From Scratch!

Today, November 1st, 2020, marks the 10th birthday of our 3rd full length album “Start from Scratch!”. It (still) is an important album for us and a favorite of a many. SFS seems to have been the first album that got us worldwide attention. In celebration of the album’s anniversary we had all sorts of wild plans, involving Friends First Fest and other activities, none of which will happen this year. Maybe we can make up for it next year?

If you read the title, track list and liner notes it seems that a lot of themes are relevant still, or again. We could have written songs like “Every Crisis Is a Moral Crisis” (how to deal with a heavy impact, worldwide calamity), “America’s Worst Role Model” (a horrifying American President), “Chinese Takeover” (growing influence and power of China) to describe the situation we’re in right now. Classic themes never get old!

When we released the album in 2010 we did a song-by-song introduction to the album, including guest contributions by people that did guest vocals, recorded it, released it, and other friends! Fun reads about your favorite song or the album as a whole when killing time these days:

1. Every Crisis Is a Moral Crisis (Greg Rekus, formerly of High Five Drive)
2. Buyer’s Remorse (David Finke, did the album artwork, FairTradeMerch)
3. The Hunt Is On! (Nab Ortega, formerly of Just Say Yo Zine)
4. America’s Worst Role Model (Fieke Houkes, Shield Recordings, released the album)
5. Cut The Ground From Under Our Feet (Chris Hannah, Propagandhi, did guest vocals; Thomas Nijboer, former roadie)
6. “Kraken Gaat Door!” (Etjen van der Vliet, Just Like Your Mom)
7. Some Of My Best Friends Are Meat Eaters (Marnix van Holland, formerly of Punx.nl)
8. Chinese Takeover (Lenneke Knape, formerly of Rockit Promotions)
9. Our Hearts (Yvo Kouwenhoven, former bass player)
10. The New Jew (Nico van Montfort, of XPZ Sound, recorded the album)
11. Classic Themes Never Get Old (NoReason Records, released the album)
12. So Much More (Heleen Tichelaar, did guest vocals)

Check the complete album on LP/CD, Spotify, Bandcamp, Youtube, Apple Music.

30 June 2020 ~ Comments Off on Drum Chronology is out!

Drum Chronology is out!

Almost as contagious as the Corona virus was the recent digital acoustic virus, mostly singers with an acoustic guitars. Drummers have been hit the hardest by Corona it seems. Luckily the last thing we did before quarantining was record a drum chronology! Featuring drum parts of all of our full album discography crammed together into a chronological overview; 54 songs in 5 minutes! From Silencing Civilization to ENGAGE; from No Human Is Illegal to All in the Mix. Even though we still can’t play shows, we can finally do something drum related again!

Obviously inspired by Kye Smith’s drum chronology series, audio by Emiel Thoonen, video by Ruben Smulders.

Mixed by Menno Bakker at ARC, mastering by Carl Saff. The video is created by Tijs VL, production by Roos de Huu. 09 July 2019 ~ Comments Off on If You’re Not Outraged

If You’re Not Outraged

Today we bring you the 4th edition of our singles series: If You’re Not Outraged! An energetic, urgent track with an anti-fascist message. Critical times still call for critical culture!

Artwork If You're Not Outraged

Extreme right wing ideologies are growing. Alt-right, identitarian movements and populism are proof that the far right wing is on the rise again. Just to be clear: we think that’s a bad thing. As a result the anti-fascist (re)action and movement is growing too. Just to be clear: we think that’s a good thing. Anti-fascism is not a crime!

Check this special page for If You’re Not Outraged via all platforms (Spotify, Youtube, Bandcamp, etc), the lyrics and liner notes. Join us for a Q&A about our new single today (Tuesday, July 9) at 20h00 CET on our Youtube channel.

Video If You're Not Outraged

This is the first release from our recording session with Tim van Doorn at Big Dog Recordings in Antwerp, Belgium, more to come! Mastering by Nico van Montfort at XPZ Sound. The music video is created by Bram Bergs. Single artwork by Ruben Swieringa.

Merch

To have appropriate new merch our friend Thomas at Dark Roast adapted a picture of a demonstration by the Neo-Nazi Nordic Reich Party in Växjö, Sweden in April 1985. A Polish-Swedish passerby (whose mother had been sent to Auschwitz) could no longer resist swinging her handbag at the nazis. FairTradeMerch made beautiful organic, fair-trade and vegan shirts of the design. Orders come with free downloads of all our singles, and you can still get older merch with a discount if you use NEWSLETTER25 as coupon code!

Working on stuff

This is more or less a one-off announcement. Read about our upcoming single, check the accompanying merch pre-orders, or find some heavily reduced older merch. Explore Willem’s guitar tutorial series and see our upcoming show dates.

New Single

On July 9 we will release our next single! If You’re Not Outraged is a faster and more aggressive song than our last singles. The lyrical content deals with the rise of the anti-fascist movement and its actions, responding to the growth of extreme right sentiments, and how antifascism seems to trigger critical reactions while being a positive force. Our friend and designer Ruben Swieringa created the artwork.

Guitar Tutorial Series

After getting requests about how to play our songs on guitar, Willem did a live playthrough of The Invisible Hand a couple of months ago. The interest and positive feedback led to a second playthrough (of Truth Hits Everybody) and more live videos to come! Check the videos.
