09 December 2008 ~ Comments Off on The cradle of democracy

The cradle of democracy

Today a major local news paper called "De Gelderlander" featured a picture of a Greek guy getting arrested by the cops during the "anarchist riots" going on over there. He was wearing an Anti-Flag shirt. Draw conclusions if you like. "Punk is resistance" some old wise men said some time ago.

20 August 2008 ~ Comments Off on Best night ever, books and personal stuff

Best night ever, books and personal stuff

On August 5 we played with Propagandhi in Belgium and I’m still creaming my pants when I’m thinking back on that show…  thanks to Bram and everyone of Heartbreak Tunes for taking good care of us. Thanks to all our friends and familiar faces who were at the show. Thanks to Propagandhi for being who they are, especially Chris for looking like…

Some might know we always carry a bookdistro to our shows. It was very inspiring to see so many people who were interested in the books at the Propagandhi show. It’s an extra boost to keep on doing the distro and get more books in stock. If you are interested, feel free to check out www.typewriterdistro.org

Some time ago we said Suzette’s pregnancy isn’t going very well and therefor we had to cancel some shows. We’re completely overwhelmed by all heartwarming messages we got from people all over the world. I feel I owe these people a little update: things are not going much better with Suzette, but she’s also not really sick. We can’t handle the situation a bit better now than a couple of months ago. The baby is really healthy and can be born any day now, we can’t wait!

13 May 2008 ~ Comments Off on Assorted summer news

Assorted summer news

Is your weather as great as ours? Hopefully it is. But, what's your excuse to sit behind a computer then? Ah wel … this is my excuse:

This weekend we will be playing the Give It A Name Fest in Italy, Milano. We'd love to invite all Italians to come over, but we simply don't have all your email addresses. Therefore No Reason Records put our new album temporarily as a stream on their website to promote our show at Give It A Name. If you are Italian and want to read about us in your native language go here, Noize Italia did an interview with us.

For our tour in June we're still missing some dates for which we'd love to have shows. Please check the show section and let us know if you're able and willling to help us out. Would be much appreciated! In our own little country we keep on getting more and more shows confirmed. See the same show section for details.

Remember the news that Just Like Your Mom's new van got crashed? In case you didn't believe it, here's some proof for you:

Pretty F'ed up, no? Fortunately Mom will be getting a new toy again soon.

And, as usual, we have some new reviews for you. Check em out here or under the "About" section. Both Testimony and the Waves EP have been reviewed lately.

Recensioni, LP pre-orders & More

The new album is only out for pre-order and already we're receiving reactions, responses and reviews. Which are actually quite nice, to say the least. Below you can read two reviews from Italian zines.

January 27, 2008: Antillectual – Testimony cd (No Reason Records, 2008)

The record actually doesn't come out in our country till March, and therefore I'm reviewing this album in advance: Antillectual – the latest addition to No Reason Records' catalog – coming from Nijmegen, the Netherlands, play a mixture of punk-hardcore in the style of the labels' previous releases (Rentokill, Enemy Alliance / Indecision Alarm). Melody and political commitment, in the spirit of Propagandhi, is the basis for this complex and valuable release. Valuable on several levels: the excellent looking digipack and especially the booklet – graphically sublime, including texts and additional notes for every single lyric – are no longer just an extra, but are an essential factor for the complete understanding of the message.

The 10 tracks are strongly structured  (from the musical professionalism it shows Antillectual clearly prefers unusual arrangements) and finalized very well with lyrical content: an anarchist point of view is present during the entire album, while the band gives its opinions on American imperialist policy ("Testimony"), on multinationals and their impact on the culture and the resistance against it ("Sponsorship for life"), on prison policy ("I hope you got my letter"), feminism ("Waves") and the punk circuit itself ("I hate myself when I shave myself"). In other moments, however, the discussion focuses on the personal state of mind and on individual positions. This happens without discussing concrete situations, but rather browsing the philosophical field ("Benefit of the doubt" probably one of the best songs of the album).

Testimony is certainly not a simple album, but in its kind it is undoubtedly an incredibly coherent and meticulously thought out piece of music. All this in the spirit of the highlights of the DIY movement of the eighties. It's highly recommended listening to it on repeat, especially if you want to expand your views and musical ideas. I suggest you to immediately order your copy.

Antillectual – "Testimony" (No Reason Records)

File under: Melodic hardcore/punk
Like: Propagandhi, With Honor, Crime In Stereo, No Trigger, Much The Same.
It seemed like I'm listening to the new album by the great Propagandhi, but it is "only" the debut record from the Lodi based No Reason Records from Dutch band Antillectual. Our old friends ("Silencing Civilization" – review).

"Testimony" will come out next March 3 and win over all lovers of this kind of music with their refined melodic hardcore/punk enriched with political and social lyrics. But, frankly, the lyrics stay a little in the background because of the quality of the music. This is a plus point though. There are several resemblances with the Canadian, and sometimes it appears almost plagiarism (they simply love Propagandhi too much), but in the end Antillectual convinces me totally and doesn't leave any unpleasant feeling behind. It all works out for the best.High technically compositions enriched by diverse rhythms and melodies, this is one of the better punk/hardcore releases in recent months. With sincere regards to the increasingly stubborn and conscious No Reason Records, which seems very determined to focus on this style in Italy
4 out of 5

Furthermore, we have some terrible news to announce. A lot of you might have met Etjen (our friend and driver from "Just Like Your Mom" tour support) when we came over on one of the tours we did the last years. Either in his camouflage printed van, or his insanely equipped luxury van. Since he helped us out in the best possible way and since a lot of you might know him (through us) we felt necessary to report this. Last week his van got crashed and crushed by a truck in the UK, total loss. Since it was parked there weren't any people involved and there wasn't any equipment broken. But since driving us and other bands around is not only his life but also his living, we hope he can get back on the road as soon as possible with a new van. We wish him all the luck we can!

Last, we still have some dates to fill on our upcoming tour in southern France, Spain and/or Portugal. If you feel like helping us out, please do so! The dates are these:

March 7: available
March 8: available
March 9: available
March 10: available
March 11: available

If you think you can fill our voids, let us know. If you can help us out with a show anywhere else, even in Holland, let us know. We have a new release. We want to play.

That's it! Take care.

21 September 2007 ~ Comments Off on again? so soon?!!

again? so soon?!!

yeah, sorry for that. the site just felt like it needed to be update again. mainly because we will be on tour pretty soon and we want all available information to be correct. so all the other playing bands and all venues are up to date as much as possible. if you have more info that needs to be online, let us know. for the tour kick off in merleyn you can win tickets to get in for free and get a free 7" as well. if you go to as ice hardcore e-zine or punx.nl you have to answer a question and you might get in for free if you're lucky.

we are terribly sorry that we are not playing bologna any more. the gig got cancelled because of a big demonstration that will be held because of the eviction of a squat in bologna. people were asked not to organize shows on that day to garantuee a high turn out for the demonstration. so we hope the demonstration turns out alright to support the punk/squat scene in bologna so they can exist for many more years and organize a lot of good stuff. we have played bologna twice and those were some of our best shows, we hope that we are able to come back soon! for that day we found another show in pieffe factory in gorizia, eastern italy. of course we are looking forward to play there as well!

since we are here anyway: yesterday another amazing gig got confirmed: november 30 in winston kingdom in amsterdam with the already almighty enemy alliance (ex-satanic surfers/venerea) from sweden. we are happy to play that gig as you can imagine!

and last but not least, a news update about the "community" that surrounds antillectual: angry youth records is working on a split 7" featuring new dutch punk bands as brat pack, the real danger, union town and the tenement kids. square of opposition records is working on the distribution of their new 7"es including ours and yo man go's (ex-hypatia) and looking for labels all over the world to trade and sell wholesale. our 7" is available through interpunk.com (just like our full length) and ebullition records. reviews should be in soon. just like your mom is maybe busier than we are. check the schedule on their myspace account. they are driving bands like the datsuns, bambix, high five drive, the addicts and giving chase; and at that booking shows. some one is showing off there! suzette design turned into hi-fibre, she's currently working on our new website, which is gonna look amazing! or at least better than her own … ok that's enough. for now. talk to you tomorrow!
